Report: Twins Agree to Four-Year Deal With 3B Josh Donaldson

January 15, 2020 at 03:13AM

One of MLB's last remaining big-name free agents has reportedly found a new home.

One of MLB's last remaining big-name free agents has reportedly found a new home, as third baseman Josh Donaldson has agreed to a four-year deal with the Minnesota Twins,

according to MLB's Mark Feinsand. The deal is worth $92 million, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal first reported that the 3B has a fifth-year option to get to $100 million.

After signing a one-year, $23 million deal last offseason with the Atlanta Braves, Donaldson hit 37 home runs and recorded 94 RBI, his best season since his time with the Toronto Blue Jays.

When Anthony Rendon agreed to join the Los Angeles Angels in mid-December, Donaldson became the best third baseman still on the market.

Rosenthal notes that the former Braves' deal with the Twins is second-largest for a player 33 or older—Kevin Brown agreed to a longer deal when he signed a seven-year, $105M deal with the Dodgers in 1998.

The Twins recently locked up slugger Miguel Sano on a three-year contract extension. With Donaldson's arrival, it seems likely that Sano will move to first base or DH. The Twins also added pitchers Homer Bailey and Rich Hill this offseason.

However, the team could not reach an arbitration agreement with pitcher Jose Berrios, meaning that a hearing is scheduled in February.

Donaldson joined the Twins after reportedly being targeted by the Braves, Nationals and Rangers among other teams.

The Twins went 78-84 last season, good enough for second in the AL Central.

Red Sox Fire Alex Cora in Wake of Astros Investigation

January 15, 2020 at 02:48AM

Red Sox manager Alex Cora and the club agreed to part ways on Tuesday, one day after MLB released its report on sign stealing.

In the wake of MLB's published investigation into the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal,

the Red Sox announced Tuesday night they fired manager Alex Cora.

On Monday, MLB concluded that Cora was deeply involved in the Astros' sign-stealing operation in 2017 that saw the team's manager A.J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow suspended for a year and subsequently fired.

"Today we met to discuss the Commissioner's report related to the Houston Astros. Given the findings and the Commissioner's ruling, we collectively decided that it would not be possible for Alex to effectively lead the club going forward and we mutually agreed to part ways," the team said in a statement attributed to owner John Henry, chairman Tom Werner, CEO Sam Kennedy and Cora.

"I do not want to be a distraction to the Red Sox as they move forward," Cora said. "My two years as a manager were the best years of my life.

Cora was the bench coach for the Astros in 2016 and 2017 before being hired as the Red Sox' manager in 2018. Boston won the World Series in Cora's first year, but he reportedly oversaw an illicit sign-stealing operation conducted by his team that season.

When MLB commissioner Rob Manfred released his report on the Astros' activity, Manfred noted that Cora's role in Houston's operation was far more significant than Hinch's and Luhnow's ever was.

According to MLB's report, Cora was the person who called for the installation of a monitor adjacent to the Astros' dugout, which broadcast a feed directly from a centerfield camera. Cora and other "lower-level baseball operations employees," in conjunction with players, then used that feed to determine the opposing team's signs based on the catcher's signals. The team banged a trash can to indicate if an off-speed pitch was coming, while no bang indicated a fastball was coming.

The Astros' scheme took place in 2017 and 2018, including during Houston's World Series run in 2017.

The Red Sox hired Cora as their manager in Oct. 2017. He played 14 years as an infielder in the major leagues—including four with Boston, from 2005-08—before retiring in 2011. Prior to joining the Astros he did commentary work for ESPN.

MLB has not yet punished Cora for his role in the Astros' sign stealing operation.

Steve Gleason to Receive Congressional Gold Medal on Wednesday

January 15, 2020 at 02:01AM

Former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason will be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony on Wednesday.

NEW ORLEANS — Former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason, who became a leading advocate for people struggling with Lou Gehrig's disease after he was diagnosed with the paralyzing condition, will be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony on Jan. 15.

President Donald Trump signed legislation last year awarding Gleason the medal, which is the highest civilian honor awarded by Congress. U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy from Louisiana announced the date for the ceremony in a news release Friday, noting Gleason's struggles with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative neuro-muscular disease commonly referred to as ALS that left Gleason paralyzed.

"Steve Gleason has shown tremendous courage and resolve in the face of ALS. He has remained positive in the face of extreme adversity, inspiring all who hear his story,” Cassidy said.

On the field, Gleason is best known for his electrifying blocked punt during the Saints' first game in the rebuilt Superdome after 2005's Hurricane Katrina. The city was still rebuilding from the devastating hurricane when Gleason dove to block a punt in the opening minutes of the game against rival Atlanta Falcons. The stadium itself had to be rebuilt after the storm tore open its roof as thousands of people sheltered inside.

The play was such an important part of the team's history and the city's recovery that it was immortalized in a 9-foot-tall (2.7-meter-tall) bronze statue outside the stadium called “Rebirth.” 9 feet

Gleason played seven seasons in the NFL — all with New Orleans. He and his wife continue to live in the city where he's frequently seen at sporting events, fundraisers, Saints' football practices and other events.

In January 2011, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, a struggle he documented in the 2016 film titled “Gleason.”

Cassidy said Gleason worked with the Congressional Gold Medal Committee on the medal's design. It features Gleason in a Saints jersey. Images of a mountain and forest pay homage to his native state of Washington.
