Charles Barkley on 76ers: 'They Are the Cleveland Browns of the NBA'

February 07, 2020 at 03:27AM

Charles Barkley had some strong thoughts on the Philadelphia 76ers.

TNT NBA analyst Charles Barkley had strong strong words for the

Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night.

"I think they are the softest, mentally weakest team that had a bunch of talent," the former 76ers star said. "They are the Cleveland Browns of the NBA."

Barkley prefaced his comments by saying he needed to vent about this year's team

"They got a lot of talent. And they talk the talk, but that's it."

The Sixers enter Thursday night's matchup against the Bucks just 31-20, tied for fifth in the Eastern Conference.

Earlier this week, forward Al Horford said there was "some stuff going on in our locker room," adding that the team needs to step it up. Center Joel Embiid also blamed the team's struggles on a lack of offensive identity.

Philadelphia is just 6-4 in its last 10 games, having most recently lost to the Heat by 31 points.

The Browns are coming off a 6-10 season, littered with inconsistent play and plenty of bad press. The team entered the 2019 season with Super Bowl aspirations, but fired both its head coach and general manager this offseason.

Report: Mets' Spring Training Stadium Renovation Won't Be Finished By Start of Workouts

February 07, 2020 at 02:32AM

The New York Mets' Spring Training stadium renovations are not finished just yet.

Mets pitchers and catchers begin to report for preseason workouts on Monday. But the team's $57 million overhaul of Clover Park, its spring training home, is reportedly just over halfway finished.

According to the Treasure Coast Palm, citing a December quarterly construction report St. Lucie County sent to the state, the renovations of the Mets' 7,100 seat stadium in Port St. Lucie, Fla. is only 62% complete.

County officials told the paper that they hope to have work on the stadium done by Feb. 24, two days after New York's first Spring Training home game. The entire project is projected to be finished by June 3, according to the report.

The Mets told the paper they are "100% confident" the stadium will be ready for pitchers and catchers on Monday and for fans to watch preseason workouts on Thursday.

“We are going to be 100% open and ready for spring training,” Paul Taglieri, Mets executive director of minor league facilities, told the TP Palm.

“Fans will be able to see the left-field concourse, the new Jim Beam Bourbon Bar, the new restrooms, the new concessions. Everything that will add to the player and fan experience will be 100% ready at the start of spring training.”

A county administrator told the paper the area is still an active construction site and that signs will say "Pardon our dust." According to the report, the stadium's roof is only 60% complete and only one of the two elevators has been finished.

Much of the Mets' offseason has been uncertain. The team hired former Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran on Nov. 1, but fired the longtime major leaguer in the aftermath of MLB's sign-stealing investigation into the Astros.

The team then hired new manager Luis Rojas in late January.

Weeks earlier news also surfaced that the team's high-priced outfielder Yoenis Cespedes' season-ending injury on his ranch last season happened when he reportedly stepped into a hole during an interaction with a wild boar.

Reports also surfaced earlier this week that billionaire Steve Cohen backed out of an agreement to increase his investment for a majority stake in the team.

2020 NBA All-Star Game: Team LeBron vs. Team Giannis Draft Results

February 07, 2020 at 02:32AM

The rosters for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game are now set.

On Thursday, Team LeBron and Team Giannis drafted their respective teams for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game. As the leading vote-getter, Team LeBron selected first, and just like last year he picked Anthony Davis with the first overall pick. Antetokounmpo countered by taking Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid with his first choice.

Trae Young was the last starter assigned and is headed to Team Giannis. Each of the eight starters picked on Thursday was selected by the captain from his respective conference.

Not surprisingly, Antetokounmpo chose fellow Bucks teammate Khris Middleton with the first selection in the reserve round.

Pacers forward Domantas Sabonis was the final player assigned in the draft and is headed to Team LeBron.

Here's a look at the complete teams:

Team LeBron:

  • LeBron James (Starter)
  • Anthony Davis (Starter)
  • Kawhi Leonard (Starter)
  • Luka Doncic (Starter)
  • James Harden (Starter)
  • Damian Lillard
  • Ben Simmons
  • Nikola Jokic
  • Jayson Tatum
  • Chris Paul
  • Russell Westbrook
  • Domantas Sabonis

Team Giannis:

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo  (Starter)
  • Joel Embiid (Starter)
  • Pascal Siakam (Starter)
  • Kemba Walker (Starter)
  • Trae Young (Starter)
  • Khris Middleton
  • Bam Adebayo
  • Rudy Gobert
  • Jimmy Butler
  • Kyle Lowry
  • Brandon Ingram
  • Donovan Mitchell

Lakers coach Frank Vogel will coach Team LeBron. While Raptors coach Nick Nurse will coach Team Giannis.

The league also announced that the format of the game will be different this year. The league has turned every every quarter into a mini-game for charity before an untimed final quarter with a target score will decide which teams wins.

All-Star Weekend takes place between Feb. 14-16 in Chicago. Friday will feature the Rising Stars game with tipoff set for 9 p.m. ET. All-Star Saturday Night begins at 8 p.m. ET. Sunday's All-Star game starts at 8 p.m. ET.

The Rockets have led the NBA in three-point attempts in each of the last three seasons– setting the league record on each occasion–and are on pace to at least lead the NBA again with 43.84 attempts from beyond the arc per game this season. Following Wednesday's 12-player, four-team trade, though, Houston (32-18) does appear to be making a run at last season’s franchise-record average of 45.38 attempts.

The Rockets dealt starting center Clint Capela to the Hawks along with veteran big man Nene, forward Gerald Green and their 2020 first round pick to the Nuggets. In return, they received swingman Robert Covington and Jordan Bell from the Timberwolves. The trade means the Rockets–anchored by star scoring guards James Harden (35.8 points per game) and Russell Westbrook (26.4)–is going to rely even heavier on the perimeter game.

The 6-foot-7 Covington, who averaged 12.8 points and 6.0 rebounds, while shooting 34.6% from deep, was the key player the Rockets sought for their postseason ambitions. He has the size to guard the multitude of talented small forwards in the Western Conference–most notably Lakers forward LeBron James, fellow All-Star Kawhi Leonard of the Clippers, and Leonard's teammate Paul George.

Covington's defensive versatility also plays into Houston’s philosophy of switching on screens in defensive coverage, but the gaping hole in the middle with the departure of the 25-year-old Capela must be addressed via team rebounding. The Rockets were 11-1 in the 12 games Capela missed before being dealt, and it would not be a surprise if general manager Daryl Morey makes another move to bolster his team's frontcourt.

The Lakers (38-11), meanwhile, enter this contest looking for their third consecutive victory. At age 35, James continues to show there is more to his game than bulldozing his way into the paint. He showed his own perimeter prowess in leading Los Angeles to a 129-102 rout of San Antonio on Tuesday night.

James unleashed a three-point barrage in the fourth quarter when he scored 19 of his 36 points, hitting five straight in a 2:56 span when the Lakers put the game out of reach with a 21-10 surge. If James can continue to do damage on the outside, that could leave Anthony Davis to rampage along the inside with Capela no longer a defensive impediment.

James had 31 points and 12 rebounds as the Lakers used a big third quarter to record a 124-115 victory at Houston without Davis on Jan. 18. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope provided a spark off the bench with 20 points, as Los Angeles had four players with 20 or more points to offset a combined 69 by Harden and Westbrook.

Jay Berhalter is Leaving the U.S. Soccer Federation

February 07, 2020 at 02:16AM

Berhalter, the chief commercial officer and brother of USMNT coach Gregg, was thought to be a candidate for the vacant CEO position, but is instead moving on.

Jay Berhalter, U.S. Soccer's chief commercial officer and brother of U.S. men's national team coach Gregg Berhalter, is leaving the federation, U.S. Soccer announced Thursday night.

Jay Berhalter had come under fire

amid anonymous Glassdoor reviews that uncovered a toxic culture within U.S. Soccer this past summer, and his presence as an executive within the federation led to concerns over a conflict of interest, given his familial ties to the USMNT coach.

Nevertheless, he maintained his high position of influence and importance within the federation and was thought to be a front-runner for the vacant CEO position within the federation, with the departed Dan Flynn's seat yet to be filled amid a lengthy search process. Flynn left the federation in September, but he announced his intentions to step away long before then. SI's Grant Wahl reported on Wednesday that Berhalter was no longer a candidate for the position, though, with, with a U.S. Soccer source saying that "he did not receive positive reviews from U.S. Soccer employees in a recent anonymous survey conducted by the federation."

According to U.S. Soccer's announcement, he is not being pushed out of the federation and is instead leaving on his own volition at the end of the month.

As chief commercial officer, Berhalter was responsible for spearheading a number of efforts, including the highly successful 2016 Copa America Centenario, which left U.S. Soccer with a reserve of over $160 million after a profit of $75 million on that event alone.

“Jay has played an invaluable role in the growth of our Federation and the evolution of the game in our country,” U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said in a statement. “His deep understanding of all the technical, commercial, and business aspects of the sport will have a lasting impact on the game across America.”

Berhalter spent 15 years with the federation across two stints, and he served as chief operating officer for the 2003 Women's World Cup, which was relocated from China to the United States amid the SARS epidemic and organized in just four months. He also led the effort to create the Boys' Development Academy in 2007 before leaving the federation in 2009. He returned in 2014 in his current role, which included leading the federation's rebranding.

“Having been involved in the sport since the 1994 World Cup and the start of Major League Soccer, working towards the mission of making soccer the preeminent sport in the U.S. has been a fantastic opportunity throughout my career,” Jay Berhalter said in a statement. “I am fortunate to have worked with so many passionate teammates and proud of what we have been able to accomplish together at all levels of the game. My decision to leave U.S. Soccer was not an easy one to make, but it’s the right one for my family and me at this time. Looking to the future, it is exciting to imagine the opportunities that lie ahead.”

The search to fill Berhalter's vacated position will begin immediately, the federation said, while the search to fill the CEO void continues. Of note on the U.S. Soccer calendar is the federation's annual general meeting, which is slated to be held in Nashville next week.

MLB Hopeful to Finish Red Sox Investigation Before Spring Training

February 07, 2020 at 01:48AM

Before Red Sox Spring Training opens next week, MLB is hoping to publish its results of its investigation into Boston.

Speaking Thursday after an owners meeting, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said he's looking to finish the league's investigation into the Red Sox by the start of Boston Spring Training next week.

"I’m hopeful that that I can get Boston done before the camps open,” Manfred

said, with workouts starting Wednesday.

Manfred reiterated that like in his conclusions on the Astros, no Red Sox players will be punished for their role in the team's alleged sign-stealing operation in 2018, when they beat the Dodgers in the World Series. It was then-manager Alex Cora's first season with the team.

Cora was let go by the club just days after the results of the Astros investigation were released, as he was the bench coach during Houston's title run in 2017.

Manfred also said Thursday the league will have new guidelines as it relates to the use of video equipment before the upcoming season starts.

"I think we have too much video available in real time right now," he said.

During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci, Manfred said he has considered not making video rooms available to teams once games start. The only monitor available to a team could be a replay screen with an MLB security official standing next to it.

"That's the first path," he said. "It is an option. We have talked about it. We are not done on 2020 [protocols], no."

When asked by Verducci if more protocols will be in place by the start of the 2020 season, Manfred replied, "Absolutely."

Despite whatever protocol changes come in 2020, Manfred made it clear that MLB has zero tolerance for cheating.

"Whenever you have an allegation that the outcome of a game was altered by a rules violation," he said, "that falls into the category where fans believe the competition has been affected, and it’s an integrity issue. The integrity of the competition."

Manfred also told Verducci that MLB is looking into the Red Sox allegations with the "same thoroughness and vigor that we did Houston."

In the Houston investigation, which lasted three months, MLB interviewed more than 60 people and acquired more than 70,000 e-mails in addition to text messages obtained. According to Verducci, upon learning of the Boston investigation, owner John Henry asked Manfred if Red Sox personnel would be subject to the same type of disclosure. Manfred assured him that the same procedures will be used.

MLB learned of the possible Boston infraction during its investigation of the Astros. In 2017, MLB also fined the Red Sox for using Apple Watches to steal signs against the Yankees at Fenway Park.
