Jets host Rangers in quest for 4th straight win

February 11, 2020 at 02:40AM

The Winnipeg Jets entered the All-Star break resembling a team that needed a break. They have emerged from the hiatus as a team starting to get on a roll.

The Jets attempt to get their season-high fourth straight victory Tuesday night when they host the New York Rangers.

Winnipeg lost its final four games before the break and six of its last seven games before the nine-day layoff. The skid reached five games with a 2-1 home loss to the Boston Bruins on Jan. 31 but since then the Jets are 4-0-1 in their last five games, matching their longest points streak of the season.

The Jets are heating up again as their top players are also making contributions.

Kyle Connor, who has a team-high 28 goals and whose 59 points are tied for best on the squad, has three and six assists in six games since the All-Star break. Mark Scheifele, who is tops on the team with 36 assists and tied with Connor with 59 points, has five helpers since the break while Patrik Laine, who has 24 goals and 53 points, has seven goals since the break.

The trio contributed to a successful weekend when the Jets posted consecutive 5-2 home wins over the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks.

Laine scored three power-play goals in Saturday's win over Ottawa when Connor also had a goal and three assists. In Sunday's win over Chicago, Connor scored twice to go along with an assist while Scheifele collected two assists to help the Jets overcome an early two-goal deficit.

"We finally have got it turned around a little bit now," Winnipeg's Blake Wheeler said. "We're believing in that game a little bit. It's given us an opportunity to win every night and we're getting those results."

While Winnipeg's surge has put it back into one of the wild-card spots, the Rangers head into a three-game trip well behind in the playoff race. But the Rangers are 4-2 since the break and 8-5 in their last 13 games since losing three straight Dec. 31-Jan. 4.

New York also is trying to get a season-high five games over .500. The Rangers are four games over for the ninth time after scoring three goals in the third period of Sunday's 4-1 home win over the Los Angeles Kings.

"A streak has to start with one," New York's Chris Kreider said. "We're cognizant of the standings and where we are. Obviously we need to go on a little run. We don't necessarily talk about it a lot, but what has been said is that our fate is in our own hands."

New York's fate in the lead-up to the Feb. 24 trade deadline also lies in its performance on the road. The Rangers play five of seven games away from home before the deadline and eight of its next 10 on the road through Feb. 28.

The Rangers are also coming off the best performance of rookie goaltender Igor Shesterkin's brief career. He is 3-1 with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage after making 42 saves Sunday.

"If you're going to be great, you better know you're great and he knows he's great," Rangers coach David Quinn said. "And for good reason. He's got a track record that's pretty impressive at a high level."

The Rangers are playing with three goalies on the roster since Shesterkin joined the team on Jan. 7. Alexandar Georgiev started Friday's loss to Buffalo while Henrik Lundqvist started (and was eventually pulled) in a 5-3 loss to Dallas on Feb. 3, but according to Quinn, keeping goalies sharp is not the focus anymore.

Giannis Antetokounmpo to Sit Out vs. Kings After Son's Birth

February 11, 2020 at 02:46AM

The 2018-19 MVP announced the birth of his son, Liam Charles Antetokounmpo, on Monday.

Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will be out against the Kings on Monday night, but the reigning MVP's absence will be a celebratory one.

Antetokounmpo is missing the matchup in Milwaukee as he celebrates the birth of his son, Liam Charles Antetokounmpo. Giannis announced the news via Twitter.

"I have no information on the whereabouts of Baby Freak or when Baby Freak is going to be here, but I know from the entire Bucks organization, we're hoping for nothing but a healthy and happy mother and baby," Bucks vice president Alex Lasry said on Monday, according to ESPN's Eric Woodyard. "And hopefully a future Buck."

Antetokounmpo heads to the bench in the midst of another potential MVP campaign. He is averaging 30 points and 13.5 rebounds per game this season, and the Bucks sport the NBA's best record at 45–7.

Perhaps the newest Antetokounmpo can hoist his first MVP trophy sometime in the 2040s.

Red Wings head to Buffalo in search of winning streak

February 11, 2020 at 01:20AM

Last week, the Detroit Red Wings ended their latest extended losing streak with a victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

Now the Red Wings aim for third win in four games with a second victory over the Sabres during a six-day span, as Detroit visits Buffalo on Tuesday night.

Detroit might sit at the bottom of the league with a paltry 32 points, but it's picked up four points in the last three games following an 0-8-1 stretch. The slide ended with a 4-3 shootout victory at Buffalo on Thursday.

Though the Red Wings blew leads of 2-0 and 3-2 in that contest, they managed to prevail with Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou each posting shootout goals. After following that triumph with a 2-0 loss at Columbus, Detroit pulled off an impressive 3-1 home victory over Boston on Sunday.

In that one, Athanasiou scored a pair of third-period goals to help the Red Wings take down one of the top teams in the NHL.

"This shows everyone in the (dressing) room that if we compete, we can beat anyone," Athanasiou, who recorded his first points in four games since missing 13 with a lower-body injury, told NHL.com.

"If we come together and play a good solid game we can compete with the best teams in this league."

Detroit last won back-to-back games on Jan. 7 and 10, but will try for a third consecutive victory at Buffalo. That's where the Sabres are mired in an 0-2-1 rut and have just one win over their last six games.

Buffalo fell behind 3-0 in the first 12 minutes there Sunday against Anaheim and lost 3-2. Rasmus Dahlin and Johan Larsson had goals, but the Sabres lost for sixth time in eight games overall.

"It was important the character they showed to get (Sunday's game) turned," Buffalo coach Ralph Krueger said of his club. "We need to take the energy we showed in the last 50 minutes of the game into the next one."

Defenseman Dahlin has two goals with eight assists over his last 12 games. However, teammate Jeff Skinner has just one point in his last 16 contests.

It's uncertain who the Sabres will have in net after Carter Hutton, who has one win in his last seven home starts, was unable to go Sunday due to a family issue. Andrew Hammond was called up and Jonas Johansson pressed into a starting role and made 25 saves. Johansson stopped 18 shots against the Red Wings last week.

Detroit's Jonathan Bernier, meanwhile, has a 1.87 goals-against average over a 5-4-0 starting stretch. That included a 29-save effort versus Buffalo in that most recent meeting. Teammate Jimmy Howard, who started Friday at Columbus, is 0-16-2 with a 4.33 goals-against average as a starter since helping to beat Edmonton on Oct. 29.

Larkin, who leads Detroit with 40 points, scored twice against the Sabres last week. He's recorded seven goals with two assists in his last eight games versus Buffalo.

Detroit could get a boost with the expected return Tuesday of winger Anthony Mantha (12 goals, 12 assists), who has been out since Dec. 21 with broken ribs and a punctured lung.

No. 6 Dayton battles Rhode Island at top of A-10

February 11, 2020 at 01:14AM

Dayton kept multiple streaks alive with Saturday's victory over Saint Louis.

The No. 6 Flyers hope to keep rolling when they take on Rhode Island in Tuesday's Atlantic 10 Conference game in Dayton, Ohio.

The Flyers (21-2, 10-0 Atlantic-10) close out a three-game homestand riding a 12-game winning streak to go with 14 consecutive victories at home, dating to last season.

Sophomore forward Obi Toppin is averaging 19.6 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 62.6 percent from the field.

The Flyers had a tougher-than-expected battle against the Billikens, but they prevailed for their second victory over their conference foe this season.

"We're happy to come out with a victory," Dayton coach Anthony Grant said afterward.

"We knew we needed to put together a 40-minute game to be able to handle different things that come at you over the course of a game. I thought we got a great opportunity to experience that today. I'm proud of our guys. We made enough plays down the stretch, both offensively and defensively, to get the win."

The Flyers might need another 40-minute effort on both ends to upend the Rams (18-5, 10-1).

The Flyers and Rams are the top two teams in the conference standings, with the Rams nipping at the heels of the first-place Flyers. The teams will play two games against each other in a short period, as the Flyers head to Rhode Island on March 4. The Rams have won 10 straight games and are 6-3 on the road this season.

Whereas the Flyers struggled to beat Saint Louis on Saturday, Rhode Island is coming into the battle for first place off a dominant 82-51 win over George Washington. Fatts Russell paced the Rams with 24 points, and Cyril Langevine had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Russell is averaging a conference-best 20.3 points per game, with 20 points or more in five of his past six games.

The Rams, who were picked to finish fourth in the conference preseason poll, have proven to be a good team on the road, winning all five league games away from home.

Besides the on-court matchup, the conference clash pits two of the hottest coaches in the country in Grant and Rhode Island's David Cox. Both are considered to be in the running for national coach of the year honors.

Cox said Tuesday's game should be entertaining.

"This is what you dream about," Cox said. "This is what you get into college basketball for as a player and surely as a coach. Away game. There will be 12,000 people in there. They'll be going crazy.

"They've got probably the best player in college basketball on their team (in Toppin). They've got a seasoned, veteran coach who has coached at the highest level. It will be a challenge, of course. But this is what I've dreamed of."

The Rams have one of the top defenses in the country, ranking seventh in opposing 3-point field-goal percentage (28.2 percent). But the Rams don't have a deep team, ranking 317th in the country in bench minutes, according to kenpom.com, nor do they rely on 3-pointers. Rhode Island is last in the conference in 3-point attempts per game at 17.6.
